Literally meaning “muddy river confluence” in Malay, Kuala Lumpur has grown from a small sleepy Chinese tin-mining village to a bustling metropolis of around 6.5 million (city-proper population of 1.8 million) in just 150 years. A cultural melting pot with some of the world’s cheapest 5-star hotels, great shopping, even better food and some of nature’s wonders in just an hour away, this dynamic city has much to offer for every visitor.
Kuala Lumpur (called simply KL by locals), Malaysia’s sultry capital packed with historic monuments, steel-clad skyscrapers, lush parks, mega-sized shopping malls, bustling street markets and trendy nightspots. Also an essential part of the vibrant mix are incense-wreathed, colorfully adorned mosques and temples of the country’s Malay, Chinese and Indian communities. A reverence for these ancient cultures is balanced with a drive to be plugged into the contemporary world, as evidenced by an exciting contemporary art and design scene and a buzzing digital economy.
It won’t take you long to realize, despite the heat, this is a city best explored on foot. Walk and you can catch all the action and save yourself the frustration of becoming entangled in one of KL’s all-too-frequent traffic jams. To tackle this problem, a new mass rapid transit (MRT) system is under construction. Soaring property values are also causing characterful old buildings to be torn down and replaced with bland new towers. Such disruptions aside, parts of KL retain the laid-back ambience and jungle lushness of the kampung (village) it once was.

Malaysia is a Southeast Asian country consisting of 13 states and three federal territories. It acquires a total landmass of 330,803 Sq Km which is separated by the South China Sea into two similarly sized regions – the Peninsular Malaysia and Malaysian Borneo. While the Peninsula flaunts bustling cities, tea plantations and beautiful colonial architecture, Malaysian Borneo comprises wild jungles, remote tribes, and granite peaks. The country presents a perfect balance of modern amenities and natural habitats. The capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur boasts a shimmering skyline, which is dominated by the world’s tallest twin towers – Petronas Towers. It is also the tourist hub of the country with magnificent attractions like Aquaria KLCC, Merdeka Square, Batu Caves, Istana Budaya, Thean Hou Temple and a dozen museums, parks and shopping centres. Providing a striking contrast to it are the traditional longhouse villages and pristine rainforests in the state of Sarawak. You can spot orangutans, crocodiles, proboscis monkeys, and the world’s largest flower – the Rafflesia here. Adventure seekers can take a ‘flying coffin’ riverboat up the Batang Rejang river, or to the fascinating Bat Caves and extraordinary rock formations of Gunung Mulu National Park. The state of Sabah also lure tourists with its turquoise-fringed islands having mesmerizing coral reefs.

It is a great place to shop not too far from New York. We took the bus from Port Authority and traveled through the countryside to get there.
